Warriors Gaming Squad Wins THE TURN Powered By AT&T
May 11, 2019
That was surprisingly dominant. Warriors Gaming Squad earned their first tournament championship since the NBA 2K League’s inception, stopping 76ers GC in their tracks en route to a 58-39 win to conclude Saturday’s action.
76ers GC entered THE TURN final poised for a second straight tournament championship, but those hopes were almost completely dashed by the end of the first quarter. It’s not hyperbolic either, as Warriors Gaming Squad held an 18-7 first quarter lead, holding THE TIPOFF champions to their first single-digit quarter of the entire 2019 season.
That deficit continued to grow, albeit slowly, in the ensuing quarters with Golden State boasting a 43-28 lead by the end of three quarters – a lead that truthfully felt insurmountable.
The credit goes in large part to WGS center Type, who celebrated his birthday Saturday with Intel Player of the Game honors. The 2018 fourth-round pick has blossomed into arguably one of the best big man in the game over the course of just six weeks, becoming an absolute menace both on the glass and in pick-and-roll situations. Saturday’s penultimate showing was no different, as Type went a perfect 7-of-7 from the field along with 13 rebounds, four steals and a block while holding his counterpart Steez, to just 16 points.
Besides a surprisingly ineffective game from star point guard Radiant (13 points, 11 assists), 76ers GC attempted 13 less shots than their opponent, losing both the turnover margin (10-to-5) and the rebounding advantage (20-to-15). It’s a stunning set of losing conditions from a normally potent Philadelphia squad, but one that should reinforce the notion that Warriors Gaming Squad is a legitimate threat in the NBA 2K League, only one season after registering just four wins during the entire regular season.
It helps that CB 13 and Bsmoove continue to be an offensive force for Warriors Gaming Squad, as the backcourt duo each scored 17 points while going a combined 14-of-25 from the field. Coupled with the defensive efforts of Type, this team is clearly a formidable force in every phase of the game and quite possibly could be the best in the NBA 2K League at the moment.
