Q&A with NBL Oz Gaming's Head Coach Mootyy - NBA 2K League

Q&A with NBL Oz Gaming’s Head Coach Mootyy

Q: After having such low expectations by community standards coming into the season, what does it mean to you to see your team exceeding expectations thus far?

A: “Seeing my team exceed all expectations so far honestly means the world to me. I’m truly passionate about this profession and want the best for my org and players, so it’s surreal to see how everything has unfolded so far.”

Q: Where have you seen the biggest growth and development in Harry’s gameplay since the start of the season?

A: “The biggest growth and development in Harry’s gameplay since the start of the season is his ability to control a room now. Initially, you could tell he was hesitant and wasn’t the most confident or comfortable but now anything he says or does, everyone in the room fully trusts him. He’s the real deal and only is going to get better. The sky is the limit for that kid – he has all the intangibles on and off the court to be one of the greatest NBA 2K League players of all time.”

Q: After the tough loss vs Gen.G during group play, what was the team morale like and how were you able to help them refocus for the next match vs Hawks Talon GC?

A: “After the tough loss in OT vs GenG, the team morale wasn’t the best, but I immediately made us hit the film room and did everything in my power to not only lighten up the mood, but get the overall vibes up. I knew it would be essential heading into our matchup with Hawks Talong GC just hours later for our team to be confident and in good spirits. I did little things such as shadow box around with them, blast music, and the list goes on. I’m incredibly proud of how the group responded and were able to take care of business vs them after a draining loss.”

Q: Throughout both game modes this season, NBL Oz Gaming has been good, but a signature win always seems to elude you guys in big moments. How does this team take the next step to get over the hump?

A: “To be honest, I don’t think there is a hump. We were supposed to be the worst team in the league. We finished 7th overall in 3v3 playoffs and are currently the best team in the East for 5v5. We’re already over the hump and we’ve been over it.”

Q: After the series victory vs Hornets Venom GT in bracket play, NBL Oz Gaming officially clinched stage play for the fourth time this season. What do you think this says about your team?

A: “I think it says a lot about our team. Actions speak louder than words. The other teams in the league can talk the talk but they aren’t all where we are now. We’ve made every ‘in-person appearance’ and we will continue to prove anyone who doubted us wrong as the season continues to progress.”

Q: As we head into stage play, NBL Oz Gaming faces off against Gen.G Tigers once more as you guys try to right your wrongs from the previous matchup. How is this series going to be different from your last matchup?

A: “Listen, I don’t want to give too much away. If the game would’ve ended that night, I truly believe we would’ve won the game. We had all the momentum in the world, Harry was playing incredibly well, and we had the lead, and that unfortunately was stalled by the servers crashing. We had to start back up the next night and as most know, 2K is a game of runs and momentum. They were the better team the next night. Not going to say a lot, but to put things in summary, we feel we are the best team in the East right now. We’ll see what the outcome is for the best of three.”

Q: If you had to choose a team that would be your biggest threat throughout the remainder of THE TIPOFF, which team would you choose and why?

A: “If I had to choose a team to be our biggest threat throughout the rest of the tournament, I would have to say it is Warriors Gaming Squad. The reason is, I feel like they are the most complete team in the league right now aside from us. There’s nothing else more to it.”

Q: What makes  NBL Oz Gaming stand out from other NBA 2K League teams?

A: “I think Oz stands out the most from any other team for many reasons. To start, we are the most unique and entertaining team in the league. Not only are our personalities different, but our play style is something that has not been common in the league recently. Not to mention, if you’ve seen our games in person, we have one of the largest fan bases that shows up and shows out to District E for every game. We also have what now seems to be cemented as the only truly successful international guard in the league’s history, I think that’s saying something. Don’t you think? No bias, we are one of, if not the most must-watch teams in the league.”

Q: What are some of your thoughts on this season’s format? If any, what are some changes that you would like to see implemented in future seasons?

A: “Personally, my thoughts on the league’s format is that there should be more 5v5 games played. Not only do the players love it but the fans love it as well. Also, there’s no one left out during 5v5. All players, who are professionals, get to play during 5s, where for 3s, two players are mostly isolated.”

Q: Do you have any final thoughts as we wrap up this Q&A?

A: “My final thoughts are that I would like for my players to get more flowers and well-deserved credit. They have been working extremely hard, putting in overtime and the results show. Once again, we were supposed to be one of the worst teams in the league for both modes and we have exceeded expectations all around. This team was formed from scratch, think about that. We came into this season at a complete disadvantage. The players didn’t know each other, there was no chemistry before the season and they came together, bought in, and bonded well both on and off the court. They deserve so much more credit than they get. These kids are phenomenal and have bright futures in anything they want to pursue in life.”
