NBA 2K League Power Rankings: Bye Week Edition
July 2, 2019
Week 10 might go down as one of the best weeks to date in the NBA 2K League. With plenty of playoff implications on the line, a slate full of great matchups lived up to the hype, and then some.
While we gained a bit of clarity at the top of the standings, with Blazer5 Gaming cementing the best regular-season record for consecutive seasons, there remains plenty of uncertainty among the teams battling for the league’s final five playoff berths.
With a league-wide bye week, followed by the final two weeks of the regular season, here’s how the teams stack up in our bi-weekly Power Rankings.
1. Blazer5 Gaming
Regular-season record: 14-1
Previous rank: 3
Fourteen straight wins and the No. 1 seed for the playoffs locked up. Things are going good in Portland right now. About the only suspense left for them the rest of the regular season is seeing if Mama Im Dat Man takes home the MVP Award.
2. Pacers Gaming
Regular-season record: 8-4
Previous rank: 2
They are starting to peak at the right time. Following a finals appearance at THE TICKET, Pacers Gaming have won three straight to climb into fourth place. They’ve also played three fewer games than each of the teams ahead of them, so they’ll have a prime opportunity to gain additional ground down the stretch.
3. Mavs Gaming
Regular-season record: 11-4
Previous rank: 4
They can rest easy knowing they’re one of three teams with playoff spots secured. That said, Mavs Gaming’s play of late leaves something to be desired as they’ve dropped three straight. This is still a squad that won 10 in a row earlier in the season, so it’s tough to bet against them righting the ship.
4. Magic Gaming
Regular-season record: 8-5
Previous rank: 6
As with many teams, their playoff spot isn’t yet guaranteed, but this squad is looking dangerous. They’ve built off their strong showing at THE TICKET, most recently dispatching Hawks Talon GC by 43 points and Mavs Gaming by 15. Rookie big man DT exploded for 50 points in the sweep, adding to his already strong defensive play.
5. Kings Guard Gaming
Regular-season record: 10-5
Previous rank: 8
One more win will guarantee Kings Guard Gaming a spot in the postseason. Depending on how things shake out, they could find themselves as high as the second seed. They get a two-week break to prepare for a matchup with Jazz Gaming to close their schedule.
6. 76ers GC
Regular-season record: 8-5
Previous rank: 5
The good news: we’ve seen how good they can be in tournaments, which bodes well for the playoffs. The bad news: they’ve been somewhat off in recent weeks, looking far from the dominant team we saw earlier in the year. Still, they’re a squad no one will look forward to facing in the first round.
7. Warriors Gaming Squad
Regular-season record: 7-8
Previous rank: 1
Should they be ranked higher? Lower? Who knows. All we do know is that they are ready for the postseason to begin and are all but locked into the No. 8 seed. Yes, WGS have dropped five straight regular-season games, but the two-time tournament champs have much bigger aspirations.
8. Celtics Crossover Gaming
Regular-season record: 8-5
Previous rank: 14
Outside of Blazer5 Gaming, they’re the hottest team in the league. Their struggles from early on are a thing of the past thanks to a current seven-game winning streak. After just missing out on the playoffs last season, CLTX appear determined not to let it happen a second time.
9. Cavs Legion GC
Regular-season record: 8-7
Previous rank: 7
They are technically in the playoff hunt, sitting one game out of the final spots. But if Cavs Legion do come up short, last week’s overtime loss to Celtics Crossover Gaming will sting that much more. They now face a must-win in Week 12 vs 76ers GC, and even that might not be enough.
10. Nets GC
Regular-season record: 7-5
Previous rank: 12
Here’s one of the few teams in the playoff mix in total control of their own destiny. Due to scheduling, they still have four games remaining on the schedule, including dates against Grizz Gaming, Wizards District Gaming, Pacers Gaming and Mavs Gaming. Winning three of four might just be enough to get them in.
Bucks Gaming
Regular-season record: 8-7
Previous rank: 10
They split their Week 10 doubleheader, but the loss is going to be a hard one to recover from. Bucks Gaming blew a fourth-quarter lead against Cavs Legion, a team which entered tied with them in the standings and competing for the same playoff spot. They’ll likely need one more win and some help to get in.
12. T-Wolves Gaming
Regular-season record: 7-6
Previous rank: 13
It’s been an interesting season for this expansion bunch, who have gone through a coaching change and some roster turnover. Yet, here they are with three games to play right in the playoff mix. Their rise is a result of four consecutive victories that have given T-Wolves Gaming a second life.
13. Raptors Uprising GC
Regular-season record: 6-7
Previous rank: 9
They have somewhat of an advantage over others with three games still left to be played. Even more so considering the games are against Pistons GT, Heat Check Gaming and Knicks Gaming, each of whom reside in the bottom third of the standings. If Raptors Uprising win all three, things could get interesting.
14. Grizz Gaming
Regular-season record: 6-7
Previous rank: 17
Facing one of their most challenging doubleheaders to date, Grizz Gaming were left thinking, what if? After pulling off an upset of 76ers GC, they nearly did the same thing a day later against the league’s first-place team, Blazer5 Gaming. Yet, a loss on a last-second basket turned what could have been an incredible week into a deflating one.
15. Jazz Gaming
Regular-season record: 6-8
Previous rank: 15
They faced a pair of must-win games last week, resulting in two losses that effectively ended their season. As they showed at THE TURN, they’re more than capable of being a dangerous team. Too often, though, that didn’t translate to the regular season.
16. Wizards District Gaming
Regular-season record: 5-7
Previous rank: 18
Credit to them for showing fight after struggling for much of the early portion of their schedule. Their recent improved play likely won’t be enough to get them in the playoffs, yet they’ve shown glimpses of being a strong team.
17. Heat Check Gaming
Regular-season record: 4-8
Previous rank: 11
Raise your hand if you thought Heat Check would all but be eliminated from postseason contention by Week 10? Not many, I’m sure. It’s been an up-and-down season for a squad that pulled the trigger on a pair of nice midseason acquisitions, but just haven’t been able to make the pieces work.
18. Knicks Gaming
Regular-season record: 2-10
Previous rank: 16
They can still hang their hat on last season’s championship for a few more weeks. After that, they’ll need to regroup and improve on this season’s disappointing campaign. They showed flashes, including a deep run at THE TICKET, but their regular-season struggles are real.
19. Hawks Talon GC
Regular-season record: 4-8
Previous rank: 19
Just a few weeks back, Hawks Talon had the look of a team that would be fighting for the playoffs. Five straight losses later and those hopes have all but been dashed for a squad that just never seemed to find its identity.
20. Lakers Gaming
Regular-season record: 2-11
Previous rank: 20
It’s been a tough season to this point for the expansion squad. Their biggest motivation right now might be to avoid finishing in last place while ending the season on a high note with a win or two.
21. Pistons GT
Regular-season record: 1-12
Previous rank: 21
Owners of the longest losing streak in the league this season, Pistons GT have three more attempts to get back in the win column. A Week 11 showdown vs Lakers Gaming might just be their best shot.
