NBA 2K League Expansion Draft Preview

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

The 2019 NBA 2K League Expansion Draft, which will begin the roster construction of the two expansion teams, will take place Friday, October 18 at 2 p.m. ET from OS Studios in New York City and will air live on Twitch. The expansion draft order was determined by drawing ping-pong balls in random order from the official ball machine that is used for the NBA Draft Lottery. WHO ARE THE EXPANSION TEAMS?

The two teams joining the NBA 2K League in the 2020 season are Hornets Venom GT – the NBA 2K League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets – and Gen.G’s NBA 2K League team. Gen.G’s team, which will train at Gen.G’s Los Angeles HQ during the 2020 season, will be the first NBA 2K League team from outside of North America.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

The expansion draft will consist of three rounds, with each team’s third-round pick being optional.  Expansion teams have the option of selecting a third player in the expansion draft if they forgo their second-round pick in the 2020 NBA 2K League Draft. The expansion draft will be a snake draft, so the pick order will alternate in the second and third rounds (i.e. 1, 2, 2, 1, 1*, 2*).

ROUND ONE ROUND TWO ROUND THREE
1. Hornets Venom GT 1. Gen.G 1. Hornets Venom GT*
2. Gen.G 2. Hornets Venom GT 2. Gen.G*

* indicates optional picks

WHAT’S NEXT?

Beginning immediately after the expansion draft and open until Nov. 15, all 23 teams will have the opportunity to make trades in the league’s first trade window. Each team will be allowed to trade a total of five trade assets during the 2019 offseason and 2020 season. Trade assets include players, 2020 draft picks and 2021 draft picks. All trades must have a 1:1 trade asset ratio.  Teams cannot trade two picks for one player or vice versa. Multi-team trades are allowed.
