Warriors Gaming Squad (2-8) are officially out of the running for the inaugural NBA 2K League title after losing 61-57 to Cavs Legion GC (7-4) on Friday to open up Week 9 play.
Early in the game, Warriors center Type found his rhythm underneath the basket, where he was virtually free to roam and rake in rebounds for second chance points. He helped the Warriors lead 15-13 towards the end of the first quarter, but was soon overpowered by godddof2k and Hood who bullied him with more athletic archetypes. Their improved defense after the first quarter limited Type to only 9 points and 6 rebounds by halftime, which by that point Cavs Legion GC led, 36-30.
Outside of their starting center, the Warriors kept close to the Cavs due to LYKaPRO and his barrage of buckets all around the inside of the key. As a shot-creating slasher, he was able to throw in enough mid-range jumpers and fast-break dunks to go 10-for-14 from the field, which combined with two free throws, gave him 22 points on the day.
On the other end of the court, Sick x 973 looked unstoppable at the point for the Cavs; he consistently blew Warriors point guard Bsmoove at the top of the key, which allowed him to either duck up-and-under for a layup or throw it to an open teammate in the paint. He ended the game with a team-high 19 points and 13 assists for the double-double, while his favorite option Hood wound up with a double-double of his own with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
In the middle of the fourth quarter, Type regained his confidence and caught fire by making a few key defensive stops. That string of strong plays contributed to a 9-2 run that cut a double-digit Cavs’ lead to just two possessions. After a quick Cavs Legion timeout, Hood had the chance to stop the bleeding for his squad, but Type put up a monstrous block that threw Cleveland right back into trouble. With just over 90 seconds left to play, Warriors Gaming tied the game at 55-55.
After two successful Cavs Legion possessions that put them up 59-55, the Warriors eventually put up two more points through Type and had the chance to put the game back at level. A missed lay-up from Sick x 973 gave the Warriors a golden opportunity, but unfortunately, a botched fancy dunk from LYKaPRO — Warriors’ 15th turnover of the game — gave the ball back to the Cavs and ended their upset dreams.
This win for Cavs Legion GC puts them one step closer towards clinching their place in the NBA 2K League Playoffs. Next week, they’ll look to do just that against Raptors Uprising GC, while the Warriors will look forward to potentially ruining Wizards District Gaming’s postseason plans in a Saturday afternoon contest.
