Wizards District Gaming kept their playoff hopes alive for at least another game, defeating Blazer5 Gaming 74-66 to conclude Friday’s slate of Week 11 games.
With one week remaining in the NBA 2K League regular season, Wizards District Gaming (7-6) needed to win this pivotal contest in order to stay alive in the playoff race, while their Friday opposition had already locked in the No. 1 seed by virtue of an 11-1 record.
Boo Painter made sure Washington would have the upperhand to start, as the leading scorer in the NBA 2K had already hit his 30.3 average by the end of the first half. A 14-point start to the first quarter helped matters obviously, but that scoring load did more than just boost Painter’s average. A 26-12 first quarter lead was expanded only slightly in the ensuing six minutes, but 19-point first half advantage still represented the largest deficit Blazer5 Gaming has ever had in the first 12 minutes of an NBA 2K League game to date.
Blazer5 Gaming would whittle away at the deficit throughout the third quarter, however, as Mama Im Dat Man and OneWildWalnut finally started to find their rhythm in the second half. The inspired third quarter rally saw Blazer5 Gaming trail by just three points on two separate occasions, with Blazer5 Gaming ultimately outscoring their opposition in the third quarter by a score of 23-11.
In the end though, Boo Painter’s sheer offensive force became too much to handle, as the small forward would finish with 57 points on 25-of-32 from the field. Consistently being able to score two points each and every time down the floor put Blazer5 Gaming in a difficult position, one in which even their vaunted defense couldn’t overcome. It’ll be interesting to see if a more motivated Blazer5 Gaming will be able to handle Washington come the postseason, or if the new meta suggests the kings of the NBA 2K League could be in for a precipitous fall.
