The eight-seed Hornets Venom GT took on nine-seed NetsGC in Round 1 of the 2020 NBA 2K League Playoffs delivered by DoorDash.
In Game 1, Hornets Venom GT got out to an early 14-8 lead after the first quarter, but NetsGC used a strong second quarter to take a four-point lead into halftime. Type had a strong showing in the first half, posting 16 points and 11 boards. After a bounceback third quarter, Hornets Venom GT grabbed a one-point lead with one quarter remaining. In the fourth quarter the two teams were close down to the wire. Up one with 70 seconds remaining, Hornets Venom GT missed a jumper. Nets GC pushed the ball up court only to have it stolen, leading to a transition three on the other end, as Hornets Venom GT built a four-point lead with just under a minute remaining. The lead would not be relinquished as HVG won 74-69 to take a 1-0 series lead.
Choc led all scorers with 30 points to go with 13 assists, though the big double-double wasn’t enough to earn a victory. Snubby led HVG in scoring with 29, though Type was the driving force in the win, finishing with a huge 23-point, 14-rebound, five-block line.
In Game 2, the two squads played to a draw at halftime, notched 34-34 at the break. Choc led all scorers with a big 19 points, while Type nearly double-doubled thanks to 10 points and nine boards.
Hornets Venom GT opened the second half on a 5-0 run and maintained that lead for most of the quarter. NetsGC scored four quick points in the final 30 seconds to cut the lead to one and head into the fourth quarter down 53-52.
The fourth quarter was a thriller as the two teams traded baskets throughout, but Snubby and Type proved to be instrumental in the final outcome. The two minutes were filled with threes, and-ones, and clutch free throws as the teams played to a draw with 25 seconds remaining. Hornets Venom GT inbounded the ball and held it for the final shot. Snubby got in the lane and was blocked, but Type scooped up the rebound and put in the go-ahead bucket with sixth tenths of a second remaining. NetsGC got a good look on a mid-range jumper on the following inbounds, but the shot clanked out, giving Hornets Venom GT a 73-71 victory and the series win.
Hornets Venom GT will face top-seeded Raptors Uprising GC on Friday in the quarterfinals and try to play spoiler to the Raptors’ undefeated season.
