HORNETS VENOM GT SWEEPS GEN.G TIGERS 2-0 TO STAY IN PLAYOFF HUNT

July 31, 2020

RotoWire — Jeff Edgerton

Hornets Venom GT needed to stop their losing streak if they wanted to see the postseason, and they hoped the Gen.G Tigers would be their remedy. The inaugural season for the Tigers has been a disappointing one, as they’ve struggled to a 5-10 record despite a roster stacked with talent. The return of Type has injected much-needed momentum for the Hornets, and he was key in a 2-0 series sweep Friday.

The first quarter was evenly matched, as Snubby, Zae and Type directed their team to an early 20-17 lead over the first six minutes. Standout guard ShiftyKaii was also up to his usual production for the Tigers. The lead shifted to the Tigers in the second quarter, but both teams remained close, 39-36 at the half. Snubby led all scorers at the half with 16 points. The Tigers remained ahead through the third quarter, and aside from ShuftyKaii, Gen emerged as a legit 3-point threat to aid the team as they held their lead. As the fourth quarter continued, the Tigers stayed ahead until Zae drilled back-to-back threes to give the Hornets the lead briefly. ShiftyKaii was able to answer, but a jam by Type put the Hornets up by two with four seconds left. The Tigers couldn’t get the shot to fall, and the Hornets took Game 1, 72-70.

The two teams battled to a 20-20 tie in the first quarter of Game 2, and it was evident that this contest would be as hotly-contested as the first game. Snubby and Type got to work in the second quarter, and behind their combined 22 points, the Hornets were able to push the lead out to nine points, 35-26, at the half.

The Hornets extended their lead further to 18 in the third quarter despite some decent defensive play from the Tigers, but the Hornets’ defense proved to be tougher. Offensive rebounds are critical in 2K play, and usually, the winner of that battle wins the game. Both Zae and Type were able to give their squad second and third opportunities on many possessions throughout the game, and it proved to be the difference-maker. The Hornets held on, 71-59, to sweep the series and stop their losing skid. Snubby provided 22 points and nine assists, and Type stuffed his stat line with 12 points, nine assists and five steals.

Hornets Venom GT (8-6) takes on NetsGC next week, while The Gen.G Tigers (5-11) will square off against Pistons GC next Wednesday.
