Grizz Gaming Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive with Big Win

July 11, 2019

NetsGC took their second consecutive loss Friday, this time to Grizz Gaming by a score of 80-51 during Week 11 of the NBA 2K League.

Talk about a tough Friday. Entering Week 11, the conversation surrounding NetsGC (7-7) was focused on what seeding the first-year franchise would garner with games against Wizards District Gaming (6-8) and Grizz Gaming (7-7), two teams under .500 entering Friday, still left on the docket.

Instead, NetsGC not only lost control of their own destiny for the postseason, but might have played their way entirely out of the opportunity considering they’ll now join a number team with seven losses. What’s more, NetsGC will face Mavs Gaming (11-4) and Pacers Gaming (8-5) to conclude their 2019 NBA 2K League regular season, with a possible playoff berth available only if they win both games. And even that might not get them in the postseason dance.

On the flip side, Grizz Gaming picked up a monumental win for their razor thin playoff hopes, earning a tiebreaker victory over NetsGC and boasting a 29 point-differential advantage which will likely aid in the team’s standings endeavors as well.

It certainly appeared as if NetsGC would run away with this game in the first quarter, as the continually calm presence of NateKahl appeared to be at an all-time high. The championship-winning small forward scored nine points in the first frame, but it was the way in which he was racking up points that seemed almost effortless. Up nine points after the first six minutes, New Jersey quickly saw their lead slip away as Grizz Gaming exploded for a 10-2 run to start the second quarter, ultimately finishing the first half up one (25-15 quarter difference).

Chalk that run up to Grizz Gaming center, AuthenticAfrican, and point guard Vandi, who combined to score 21 points on 8-of-10 from the floor. The second half was essentially a mirror image of the first, as NetsGC once again built a stable enough lead, only to see Grizz Gaming go on an extended run to close out the contest.

Instead of the pick-and-roll duo powering Grizz Gaming to the upset victory, the second-half explosion was largely built on terrible shot selection from NetsGC, including a number of forced threes which opened the door for easy fastbreak layups. DDouble was the main beneficiary of the porous shot selection, scoring at least 10 of his 19 points from easy transition layups. Considering 15 of his 19 points came in the second half, it’s fair to say NetsGC’s poor composure ultimately cost them this game, and as a result, a possible playoff berth.
