Don’t look now but Grizz Gaming (3-4) might be rounding into form, picking up their second win during Week 5 with a 65-51 victory over Hawks Talon GC (3-3) to start Friday’s slate of games.
It was clear the Memphis defense came to play Friday, holding their opposition to just six first quarter points. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the stifling lockdown was that Grizz Gaming held their opponents in check without forcing many turnovers, instead limiting any second chance opportunities by maintaining a healthy rebounding margin – one that would persist throughout the entire game.
By the end of the first half, Grizz Gaming had essentially collected a winning margin, leading Hawks Talon GC by 11 points with only 12 minutes to go. A better offensive second half from Atlanta would mean Grizz Gaming couldn’t secure an extremely lopsided win, but it was hard to suggest the game was ever really in doubt from the third quarter onward.
It’s still early, but Hawks Talon GC is still clearly struggling to find an answer at the point guard position. New acquisition MrStylez_ continued his struggles, scoring just two points through the first eight minutes of the game; not coincidentally the best stretch Grizz Gaming put together defensively.
While MrStylez_ would finish the game 11 points, he went just 1-of-6 from deep and 5-of-13 overall from the field underscoring Atlanta’s potentially crippling issue moving forward. Shooting guard Jay A Fool would pick up the slack slightly, making all three of his long-range shots while scoring 13 points and center Arsonal continued his ever dependent run of double-doubles (15 points, 15 rebounds) but the lack of a truly dominant scoring option made it easy for Grizz Gaming to contain any come-from-behind threats.
Meanwhile almost every single member of Grizz Gaming would score in the double digits, with only center AuthenticAfrican failing to reach the plateau (nine points, 12 rebounds). He’d do much of the dirty work defensively, picking up two steals and two blocks while also piling on five assists, but ultimately the discrepancy at the point guard position proved pivotal.
Grizz Gaming point guard Vandi would rightfully pick up Player of the Game honors, tallying 18 points, 10 assists and a steal while limiting himself to just three turnovers, but both Jayrod and UniversalPhenom did their part, each connecting on at least two three pointers while providing a constant nuisance near the corner three.
