Mavs Gaming Wins Testy Battle with Wizards District Gaming

April 19, 2019

Mavs Gaming took down Wizards District Gaming by a score of 61-53 in Week 2 of 2K League action Friday night. The Mavs improved to 3-0 in regular-season play with the win and the Wizards fell to 0-2, although they’ll face Heat Check Gaming later in the evening with a chance to secure their first victory.

Things were heated from the start of the contest, and the Mavs took an early timeout after the Wiz got off to an early 4-2 lead. The admins were forced to step in and alleviate the tension during this break in the action, as players from both teams were standing up and trash talking. Dayfri was ultimately issued the first technical foul in 2K League history as a result of the discussion, and Dimez got out of his chair and left the stage momentarily to regroup. Aside from the offcourt distractions, the Wizards held a 15-12 lead through one quarter after knocking down seven of their first nine attempts from the field.

Following a tense first period, both sides settled down in quarter No. 2 and traded blows (on the court) throughout. Mavs Gaming managed to take a two-point lead with under two minutes to go in the half with the help of their stifling defense and held a 30-29 lead through two quarters of play. The Mavs shot 65 percent as a team from the field and were led in the scoring department by Mo, who put up 14 points. Wizards District Gaming shot the basketball at nearly the same clip (63.2 percent), and Gilly led the scoring effort with 11 points.

The game remained close in the third quarter, as neither team held an advantage heading into the final frame. It was the Mavs who managed to finally pull away down the stretch with the help of a big three from Mo and two clutch free throws from Dimez. Mavs Gaming won the turnover battle 16-9 and outscored the Wiz 19-11 in the final six minutes. Dimez recorded a double-double by scoring 12 points and dishing out 10 helpers, while Mo led all scorers with 22 points for the Mavs. On the other side, Ily led the Wiz with 19 points and Dayfri notched a double-double.
