Week 2 Rewind: Rivalries Add Another Layer To The League

Take a look back at the week that was in the NBA 2K League with a collection of some of the best games, performances, highlights and more from around the 2KL world.

Games of the Week

Mavs Gaming 61, Wizards District Gaming 53 — The barking between Dimez and Dayfri, the ex-teammates turned rivals, started during pregame introductions and didn’t let up until after the final buzzer sounded. Things were nip and tuck throughout, with the teams trading the lead late. Mo would provide a clutch 3-pointer with 25 seconds left en route to his game-high 22 points. The win moved Mavs Gaming to 3-0 in the regular season and into a tie for first place in the standings.

Pistons GT 76, Bucks Gaming 68 –This one featured winless Pistons GT against one of the league’s hottest teams in Bucks Gaming. As this league has proven time and time again, the parity is real. Pistons GT looked like a rejuvenated bunch with the arrival of Jaacko, who led the way with a game-high 21 points in his first league appearance.

Pacers Gaming 60, Pistons GT 53 — Pacers Gaming star Ramo had this game circled on the calendar since the schedule was released. He managed to get a bit of revenge against the team that traded him away in the offseason. As expected, it was a defensive game between a pair of gritty squads. The difference in the final result was Matty, busted out with a career-best 17 points to steer Pacers Gaming to the win.

Jazz Gaming 70, Hawks Talon GC 68 — Trending in the wrong direction, Jazz Gaming were desperately in need of a spark to turn things around. That came in the form of Gliz, who exploded for a career-best 26 points, while Yeah I Compete got on track with 18 points and 13 assists. Hawks Talon fought back to make this a close game late but couldn’t overcome the absence of Dat Boy Shotz, who was serving a one-game suspension.

Outstanding Performances

Mama Im Dat Man, Blazer5 Gaming (16 points, 19 assists) vs Lakers Gaming: Take your pick between Mama’s two outings this week (he also went for 16 points, 15 assists and 4 steals against Warriors Gaming Squad) to guide his team to a doubleheader sweep. Most importantly, he did an exceptional job protecting the ball, commiting zero turnovers against his 19 dimes against Lakers Gaming.

Plondo, Bucks Gaming (17 points, 19 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 blocks) vs Heat Check Gaming: The Milwaukee big man has been one of the league’s top rookies to this point, and this outing in a 23-point win was his best to date. Plondo had a double-double under his belt midway through the second quarter and finished a few assists shy of the season’s first triple-double.

PeteBeBallin, Mavs Gaming (25 points, 14 rebounds, 4 steals) vs Jazz Gaming: Pete got the better of his head-to-head matchup with Jazz Gaming’s Ria in a battle of top-five draft picks. In the process, he established his new season high in points and matched his best rebounding total. Oh, and he threw down a few rim-rattling dunks to boot.

OneWildWalnut, Blazer5 Gaming (26 points, 12 rebounds) vs Lakers Gaming: He’s baaaaack. The defending league MVP has returned to form and is again dominating the paint. He posted a pair of double-doubles this week, including this huge line against Lakers Gaming, as Blazer5 appear to have gotten their swagger back.

BSmoove, Warriors Gaming Squad (30 points, 6 3FGM) vs Cavs Legion GC: BSmoove is quietly having an outstanding scoring season. He’s now averaging 25.6 PPG in the regular season after pouring in a career-high 30 in the second game of this week’s doubleheader. His calling card has been 3-pointers, as he hit six in the victory.

24K Dropoff, Heat Check Gaming (21 points, 8/8 FG, 5/5 3P) vs Wizards District Gaming: Depending on the game, Dropoff is usually the fourth or fifth scoring option for his team as a do-it-all contributor. But he came alive offensively to lead Heat Check in scoring while not missing a single shot attempt. Impressive.

May, Pistons GT (16 points, 18 rebounds, 5 assists) vs Bucks Gaming: Pistons GT picked up their first win of the young season with some help from their rookie center in a tough matchup with fellow first-year big man Plondo. May had himself quite a week, later dropping a 20 & 14 line for good measure in a loss to Pacers Gaming.

Tweets of the Week

Ramo had redemption on his mind ahead of a showdown with his former team.

Making Her Mark

This week was a landmark occasion as Chiquita debuted with Warriors Gaming Squad, becoming the first female player to appear in an NBA 2K League game. With Type sidelined due to an injury, Chiquita got the call to fill in at center. She didn’t take long to make an offensive impact, hitting an early corner 3-pointer vs Blazer5 Gaming for her first career bucket. She finished with 15 points on five 3s over the two games.

Quotables

“Oh, we’re back. We’re back and we’re just getting better and better every week.” — Blazer5 Gaming’s Mama Im Dat Man on the demise of his team being greatly exaggerated.

“We’ve been battling through a lot of adversity, making a lot of changes. But, man, I love this team. We’ve got a lot of heart, we mesh well on and off the court. I may be Player of the Game, but I’m nowhere near it in the game. It’s got to go to the four guys besides me. Without them I can’t do any of this. They just make me look good.” — Lakers Gaming’s Mootyy on the relief of helping his team get into the win column.

“I was sitting at home for a while waiting for my visa to come through. It is a different environment here in person. It’s awesome so far, the environment is insane, everyone is loud.” — Pistons GT’s Jaacko following his season debut after arriving from New Zealand.
