Season 3 Remote Gameplay FAQ

All 23 NBA 2K League teams are participating in remote gameplay from their local markets. All matches air live on the NBA 2K League’s Twitch channel, in addition to select matches airing live on ESPN2, ESPN’s digital platforms and the NBA 2K League’s YouTube channel, and on delay on eGG Network in Southeast Asia.

Remote Gameplay Overview:

  • Games typically begin at 7 p.m. ET every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with four distinct matchups each night. The season schedule is available here.
    • Every Friday at 10 p.m. ET, the NBA 2K League presents a “Game of the Week,” featuring a compelling matchup for viewers.
  • Each match is played in a best-of-three format, which allows the NBA 2K League broadcast to switch between games in real time and gives fans more opportunities to experience the league’s most exciting moments.
  • All NBA 2K League in-game rules are in effect, with certain additional rules and modifications put in place to account for remote gameplay.
  • In consultation with the NBA 2K League Competition Committee, the NBA 2K League and its 23 teams have agreed to the following protocols during remote gameplay:
    • If a qualifying interruption in gameplay occurs, the restarted game is played only for the duration of time that remains on the clock at the time of interruption.
      • For example, if an interruption occurs with two minutes remaining in the third quarter, the game is restarted and played until four minutes remain in the second quarter, at which point the game is considered final, unless the teams are tied in total score between the interrupted game and the restarted game. If such a tie occurs, teams will play three‑minute overtime periods until there is a winner.
    • If a team is losing by at least 20 points with three minutes or less remaining in the fourth quarter at the time of a qualifying interruption, the game is considered final.
    • One NBA 2K League game administrator oversees each match remotely by monitoring each player’s movements via live video. Game administrators are able to hear and communicate with players directly in real time.
  • The NBA 2K League has worked with all 23 teams minimize the impact of internet connectivity by communicating what internet requirements they should have, and all 23 teams meet these requirements.
  • The NBA 2K League continues to work closely with all 23 teams to address any issues related to internet connectivity.
  • In consultation with the NBA 2K League Competition Committee, the NBA 2K League has instituted rules and processes that account for potential internet issues, including allowing teams a limited number of postponements in the event a team faces a significant internet issue.
  • 75 minutes prior to the official game start, both teams run a simulated quarter with their opponent to ensure internet capabilities.
  • If during the simulated game and up to 60 minutes prior to official game start, a team says the latency is unplayable, the team manager can request to postpone the match.
    • Teams can postpone pregame a maximum of two times at the league’s discretion and approval.
  • If in the first 60 seconds of game clock, there’s lag leading to a lag out, the game can be reset at the league’s discretion.
  • If in first 60 seconds of a game there is continuous latency, the team manager may request a complete restart of the game.
    • Teams can postpone in-game a maximum of three times at the league’s discretion and approval.
  • Postponed games will be rescheduled and must use same archetypes from original game.

Remote Gameplay FAQ:  

  1. Where will teams be competing from during remote gameplay?

Teams are competing at either team practice facilities, if permitted by their respective state government, or the living spaces they share with one another and have been isolating at together.  Any decision about teams competing from their practice facilities will be made in line with governmental directives and guidance.  The NBA 2K League will continue consulting with infectious disease and public health experts throughout the season.

  1. How will each game count in the standings?

During regular season remote gameplay, matches are played in a best-of-three format.  Each three-game-series victory will represent one regular-season win, and each three-game-series loss will represent one regular-season loss.

  1. Will teams be allowed to change their lineups for each game? Will in-game substitutions be allowed?

Teams will be allowed to change their lineups prior to each game.  However, in-game substitutions are not available during remote gameplay.

  1. Is the version of the game being used for remote gameplay the official NBA 2K League build of NBA 2K20? 

Yes.  Players will be competing on the official NBA 2K League build of NBA 2K20.  No artificial intelligence is used.  All archetypes of the same position have an equal skill level (92 rating) and varying heights and weights.  As is always the case in the NBA 2K League, gameplay is designed for the players’ skill to determine the outcome.

  1. Will statistics be uploaded to the NBA 2K League website in real time?

Unfortunately, remote gameplay prevents the NBA 2K League from uploading statistics to NBA2KLeague.com in real time.  However, final statistics will be uploaded to NBA2KLeague.com shortly after the conclusion of each game.
