Final Power Rankings: Knicks Gaming Closes Out Season at No. 1

That’s a wrap.

A historic first season of the NBA 2K League concluded in improbable fashion, with the league’s lowest-seeded playoff team in Knicks Gaming continuing their magical journey in capturing the crown in front of their hometown fans.

There could be no other team than them leading the way in the final installment of the power rankings.

Up with a Rocket!

Knicks Gaming hovered near the middle of the pack of the rankings for much of the season but finish on top following their league title.

Falling Back

After holding down the top spot for more weeks than any other team, Blazer5 Gaming’s quarterfinals exit pushed dropped to No. 5, their lowest position to date.

Note: NBA2KLeague.com’s Power Rankings are the opinion of this writer and do not reflect the views of the NBA 2K League or its clubs.

1. Knicks Gaming

Regular-season record: 5-9

Playoffs result: League champions

From having to win THE TICKET just to make the playoffs, to toppling top-seeded Blazer5 in the quarterfinals, to dispatching Heat Check Gaming in a sweep of the finals, their run to the title was nothing short of extraordinary. Perhaps most fittingly, it was glue guy NateKahl taking home MVP honors for his defensive performance and clutch 3-point shooting for a Knicks Gaming club that simply always found a way to get it done when their backs were against the wall.

2. Heat Check Gaming

Regular-season record: 8-6

Playoffs result: League runners-up

If there was one player in the league that looked prime to carry a team on his back to the title, it was Hotshot. An MVP finalist, his play over the past few weeks spearheaded Heat Check Gaming’s charge into the postseason and on through the finals. But Knicks Gaming simply developed a game plan to slow him down and didn’t let any of his supporting cast beat them in the two-game sweep.

3. Cavs Legion GC

Regular-season record: 8-6

Playoffs result: Lost in semifinals

They were in a prime position to play for the league championship as the No. 5 seed after getting Knicks Gaming on the ropes in winning the opener of their semifinals affair. Yet, they suffered losses in the ensuing two games, by a mere five combined points no less, to fall just short. Sick x 973 did the heavy lifting, averaging 22.0 points and 18.0 rebounds over the three-game series.

4. 76ers GC

Regular-season record: 10-4

Playoffs result: Lost in semifinals

They were an offensive force down the stretch. But after cruising through their quarterfinals matchup with Wizards District Gaming, they were swept by Heat Check Gaming after not being able to find an answer for Hotshot. They will however own the distinction as the league’s first-ever tournament champions with their victory at THE TIPOFF on the strength of tournament MVP Radiant.

5. Blazer5 Gaming

Regular-season record: 12-2

Playoffs result: Lost in quarterfinals

A loss as the No. 1 overall seed in their playoff opener to eventual champs Knicks Gaming will be the lasting mark on their first season, but it hardly diminishes what was otherwise an impressive showing. Blazer5 won THE TURN titled and advanced to the championship game of THE TIPOFF, while also owning the league’s best record by a full two games. They’ll have plenty of motivation in year 2.

6. Pistons GT

Regular-season record: 9-5

Playoffs result: Lost in quarterfinals

Despite boasting the league’s third-best record, a tough draw in the quarterfinals against eventual finals participant Heat Check Gaming brought an abrupt end to their season. Pistons GT proved to be a tough tournament team with a pair of semifinals appearances. Im So Far Ahead had a quietly solid year as the team’s second option with 13.4 points and 8.1 assists (10th in the league).

7. Raptors Uprising GC

Regular-season record: 8-6

Playoffs result: Lost in quarterfinals

No team closed the regular season stronger than this one, as five consecutive wins gave them the fourth overall seed in the playoffs. A loss to Cavs Legion in the quarterfinals didn’t dampen a solid season from the boys from the north. They received solid contributions from sixth-rounder KingQuai614, who finished second on the team in averaging 15.1 points.

8. Wizards District Gaming

Regular-season record: 8-6

Playoffs result: Lost in quarterfinals

The league’s leading scorer carried them as far as he could. Boo Painter, one of the MVP Award finalists, averaged 32.3 points to win the scoring title. After three straight wins helped Wizards District nab the league’s final playoff spot, Boo and Co. were unable to get out of the quarterfinals in a loss to 76ers GC.

9. Magic Gaming

Regular-season record: 8-6

A surprising turnaround put them in position to claim a postseason berth. They fell a win short of achieving their goal, but played spoiler in keeping Celtics Crossover Gaming out of the playoffs in their final game. Balance was their calling card, with five players averaging at least 10 points, led by marley213s with 16.1 points.

10. Celtics Crossover Gaming

Regular-season record: 7-7

Two appearances in finals of the league’s mid-season tournaments didn’t translate to the regular season as Celtics Crossover were knocked out of playoff contention on the final day of Week 12. Their top two picks delivered throughout the year, with oFAB averaging a league-high 17.5 assists and ARSONAL x finishing second overall with 11.0 rebounds.

11. Mavs Gaming

Regular-season record: 6-8

They likely take the crown for most disappointing team after missing the postseason, a result of losing five of six games to close the season. It was a surprise outcome for the team that featured the No. 1 overall pick in Dimez, who did his part in finishing in the top 5 in the league in points, assists and steals.

12. Grizz Gaming

Regular-season record: 6-8

With just one win in their first five games, a tough start didn’t derail Grizz Gaming’s season. They settled on a lineup after much experimenting for a respectable 10th-place regualr-season finish. One of the league’s biggest surprises wound up being AuthenticAfrican, who averaged 26.4 points and owns the single-game scoring mark with 84 points.

13. Bucks Gaming

Regular-season record: 6-8

A strong close to the year leaves them with heads hanging high after an up-and-down campaign. Their highlight of the season came at THE TICKET in an upset of fourth-seeded 76ers GC in the opening round. Game6Drake lived up to his billing as the No. 10 overall pick, averaging 16.3 points, 8.7 assists and 2.2 steals as Bucks Gaming’s floor general.

14. Pacers Gaming

Regular-season record: 5-9

An appearance in the quarterfinals of THE TIPOFF would stand as their best showing of the season. They managed to show fight in overcoming a 0-4 regular-season start to get within striking distance of a playoff spot. First-round pick WoLF 74 spearheaded the resurgence, making the full-time move to point guard and averaging 17.6 points and 8.1 assists.

15. Warriors Gaming Squad

Regular-season record: 4-10

Their M.O. was simply an inability to win close games. A strong result at THE TIPOFF was followed by losses in six of their next seven games despite playing their opponents tough. Their most consistent contributor throughout was Vert, who finished eighth in scoring (20.4 points) and sixth in rebounds (8.7 rebounds) among all players.

16. Jazz Gaming

Regular-season record: 5-9

Jazz Gaming hovered near the top of the standings during the early portion of the year with a 5-2 start. Things slowly unraveled after that as they dropped seven consecutive games to close out their campaign. MrSlaughter01 quietly put up dominant numbers in the frontcourt, averaging a double-double (21.0 points, 10.3 rebounds) during the regular season.

17. Kings Guard Gaming

Regular-season record: 4-10

A team that entered the season with high expectations following a draft that saw them nab a trio of Mootyy, worthingcolt and Timelycook just couldn’t get on the same page. The result was a nine-game losing streak over the second half of the season, salvaged only by a win in their finale as they finished tied with Warriors Gaming Squad for worst regular-season record.
