The Warriors Gaming Squad came out to play late Wednesday night, knocking Wizards District Gaming out of The TIPOFF Tournament with an 82-66 victory. Off the back of Vert’s near triple-double, Golden State ran wild on Washington’s defense, hitting 75 percent of their three-point attempts and shooting a scintillating 69 percent overall.
After the two teams traded buckets in the opening minutes, Vert and type combined to form an 8-0 run, allowing the Warriors Gaming Squad to take a 23-12 first quarter lead. The duo could not be stopped down low, combining for 41 points and 15 rebounds thanks to second-chance points and defensive hustle in the paint.
Vert was on triple-double watch by the first quarter and into halftime, posting up 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in 12 minutes of play. He did not hit what would have been the 2K League’s first ever triple-double, but finished with a stuffed stat sheet of 25 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, three steals and a block.
For Wizards District Gaming, Demon JT and Boo Painter led their team with 24 out of 30 first half points. Jin and xGREATxGILLY13 sparked an 8-0 Washington run to begin the third quarter, cutting the Warrior Gaming Squads 42-30 lead to four points in only 79 seconds.
Despite Washington coming close to stealing a playoffs spot, the Squad held onto their lead by keying up on perimeter defense. Shawn_Win’s three-point accuracy shone in this second half, as he took advantage of wide open opportunities to continue his perfect game from beyond the arc. The sharpshooter hit all five of his shots from downtime — his only attempts of the game — which included back-to-back triples at the end of the third quarter that killed District’s momentum.
Wizard District Gaming’s Boo Painter went on to earn a double-double by the end of the game, scraping together 26 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
Due to tiebreaker rules, the Warriors Gaming Squad took first place over Jazz Gaming, who they beat 62-56 earlier in the day. They will face Pistons GT in the quarterfinals, while Jazz Gaming will square off against Cavs Legion GC.
