Outplayed for essentially three quarters, Blazer5 Gaming (7-1) put together a hellacious run Wednesday in the final eight minutes and change to score a 61-53 victory over Raptors Uprising GC (2-4) to kick off Week 6 of the NBA 2K League.
For a team competing to be considered among the best in the NBA 2K League, Blazer5 Gaming certainly didn’t look up to the task against the lowly Raptors squad that had won just four games (including tournaments) entering Wednesday’s matchup.
An eight-point first quarter put Blazer5 Gaming in a hole early, with point guard Mama Im Dat Man representing the only points of the first six minutes for Portland. The team would put together a little more offensive in the second quarter but struggled to stop a clearly more energetic Raptors offense, as Uprising GC sported a stunning seven-point lead heading into the break.
It really wasn’t until midway through the third quarter that Blazer5 Gaming finally displayed the type of offensive explosiveness that many have come to expect, with none other than first-quarter hero, Mama Im Dat Man, able to save the day.
The point guard and perhaps leading MVP candidate through six weeks continued his assault on the NBA 2K League, finishing the contest with 22 points (7-15 FG, 4-7 3Pt), 11 assists, two rebounds and two steals, with 14 of those points coming in the second half.
An absurd off-balanced fadeaway three by Mama midway through the fourth quarter gave Blazer5 Gaming their first lead since 4:21 in the first quarter, and the team essentially never looked back from that point forward. The entire front court of Portland (KinG PeroXide, Jomar12 PR and OneWildWalnut) accounted for 37 of the team’s point, but no one individual truly stood out – at least compared to past dominating games.
The addition of Sick x 973 from Cleveland continues to pay dividends for the Raptors as the center nearly posted a team-high of 15 points, including three-of-five from deep, but a combined seven turnovers from the team’s primary dribblers (point guard Doza and small forward Kenny Got Work) ultimately allowed Blazer5 Gaming to hang around far longer than their play should have allowed.
