On the back of a historic 52-point performance from Hood, Cavs Legion GC advanced past Mavs Gaming 75-71 in a slugfest between two teams who epitomize the 5-out motion offense.
Dimez and Hood were both in the starring roles of their respective teams, slotting in as shot-creating slasher small forwards, while Dayfri matched up against Sick x 973 at the point. Although both teams struggled to shoot in the game’s opening minutes, Mavs Gaming jumped out to a 10-4 run as Dimez got hot in the paint early. Their lead was soon squashed by an 11-0 Cavs response before the teams levelled out and eventually ended the half within a point of each other.
During this half, Hood dropped 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting, which makes his final statline all the more impressive. Cavs Legion GC ran their offense solely through Hood in the second half, with Cleveland’s star putting up 35 out of his team’s 41 points in the final 12 minutes. Even though his in-game rival Dimez wound up scoring 43 points for Mavs Gaming, Hood’s offensive production single-handedly undermined whatever shortcoming Cavs Legion had on defense.
The teams traded leads right up to the game’s final minute, where Hood dunked over Dimez for his 50th point and tied the game at 71-71. Earlier in the fourth quarter, Hood gave his defensive assignment over to Godddof2k so that the slashing stretch five could cause trouble in the paint. Godddof2k did just that on the Mavs next possession, stealing the ball from a driving Dimez and ultimately giving Hood the chance to break the NBA 2K League single game scoring record.
After Hood’s 24th bucket of the game, TurnUpDefense dunked in the dagger that sent the Cavs into the semifinals, where they will face the Cinderella Knicks Gaming squad who danced past Raptors Uprising GC and Wizards District Gaming.
As for Mavs Gaming, they walk out of Brooklyn with their third straight top-eight placement at an NBA 2K League tournament. Fortunately for them, they really didn’t need the free pass into the Playoffs anyways, as they are ranked fifth in the regular season standings. They will look to stay within playoff contention next week when they face Grizz Gaming at 11 a.m. on July 21.
