Mavs Gaming vs Pacers Gaming

May 4, 2018

– Rotowire –

Pacers Gaming upset Mavs Gaming with a defensive-focused 57-50 win on Day 4 of THE TIPOFF, bringing their Group D record to 1-1.

While we’ve seen some offensive explosions at various points during THE TIPOFF, this was a battle of lockdown defenses through and through. The first quarter saw just 24 points between the two teams combined, as they jockeyed for position during the initial six minutes. Defense might have been the main takeaway of this quarter, but it was hard not to notice the early domination of Pacers small forward WoLF, who tallied seven of the team’s 11 points in the first quarter. That ended up being a sign of things to come as the game progressed.

No. 1 overall pick in the NBA 2K League Draft, Dimez, surely did his best to try and get his team into a rhythm in the second quarter, but the defense of the Pacers was too much to handle. Pacers Gaming met every fancy look and attempted crossover from Dimez with a stifling, lockdown barricade that resulted in 10 first-half turnovers for Mavs Gaming, four of which came from Dimez. As such, Mavs couldn’t quite find a groove and the Pacers benefited with a 25-22 lead at the half.

It wasn’t over yet for the Mavs, though, as Dimez shored up his play in the third quarter, dishing assists to forwards Dayfri and devillon to keep the action close. A big three at the buzzer from Dimez put Mavs within striking distance, down just two points heading into the final quarter. Mavs Gaming managed to continue that momentum into the early moments of the fourth quarter before WoLF came alive once again to slam the door shut on Mavs Gaming.

In the final two minutes of the game, Mavs Gaming was unable to find any clean looks as WoLF and company pressed with relentless aggression, forcing bad look after bad look. Once the team hit 50 points with 2:41 left, Pacers Gaming didn’t give up a single bucket while pouring on six more points to seal the deal. No doubt the MVP for the Pacers was WoLF who filled the scoresheet with 28 points, one rebound, three assists, and three steals on 13 of 15 shooting.
