Mavs Gaming improved to 3-1 on the season, defeating Heat Check Gaming 70-61 on Friday.
For the first time in NBA 2K League history, all five members of a team scored in double figures as Mavs Gaming utilized a variety of open scoring opportunities to hold off an ever resilient Heat Check Gaming.
A relatively mundane game from power forward Dayfri opened up the opportunity for the rest of the Mavs to get involved, as the normally automatic pick-and-roll option was stymied by a strategic gameplan from Miami. While that didn’t hinder Dimez’ numbers (22 points and 12 rebounds), the No. 1 overall pick was forced to kick the ball outside far more frequently than past games, results in Dallas attempting 15 three pointers. JLB, devillion and BallLikeSeem responded in turn, knocking down a combined seven buckets from behind the arc. That essentially became the difference maker in this game, as Heat Check Gaming kept close throughout thanks to a standout contest from its two low post options, Hotshot and 24k Dropoff.
The duo almost single handedly helped tie the game up in the beginning stages of the fourth quarter, but the extra emphasis down low couldn’t combat a litany of open three point shots from Mavs Gaming. It’s encouraging to see the two man game play to the level they did Friday, as Hotshot and 24k Dropoff combined for 38 points on 18-of-27, but in order for Miami to rise up the standings, they’ll need more from their SG/SF combo of SharpShooterlos and HyPeR iS Pro who contributed just 9 points total.
Having faced arguably two of the best teams in the NBA 2K League throughout the first three weeks, Heat Check Gaming will likely relish their Week 4 matchup against Pacers Gaming, which could become pivotal in terms of tournament seeding depending on how the rest of the results shake out Saturday. On the flip side, Mavs Gaming will face another test next week during the marque spot Friday against Jazz Gaming.
