-RotoWire-
Mavs Gaming woke up in the middle of their Saturday matinee against TIPOFF rivals Celtics Crossover Gaming, handing Boston their first loss of the regular season with a 66-59 win. Despite an ugly first half highlighted by Dat Boy Dimez worst scoring effort so far this season BallLikeSeem’s ability to step up as a main scoring option and Boston’s foul troubles was enough to improve Dallas’ NBA 2K League regular season record to 2-0.
After Mavs Gaming scored a three-pointer to start the game, Celtics Crossover Gaming sprinted out to a 10-0 run by bullying their opponents in the paint. A quick timeout discussion and some adjustments brought Mavs Gaming within a basket of Celtics Crossover Gaming’s lead by the end of the first, but Boston soon struck back with another strong run to begin the second. At halftime, Celtics Crossover Gaming led 30-25.
oFAB completely shut down Dat Boy Dimez in this half by not allowing the NBA 2K League’s first overall draft pick to score on any of his six attempts from the field. His uncharacteristic cold streak contributed to Mavs Gaming’s 38 percent shooting performance through 12 minutes, with BallLikeSeem being the team’s saving grace thanks to his 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
On offense, oFaB scored nine points and dished out seven assists while his frontcourt dominated the paint. MEL East led his team’s scoring effort with 12 points as ARSONAL X brought in 11 rebounds en route to his eventual double-double of 20 points and 16 rebounds.
The second half saw a complete 180-degree turn from Mavs Gaming, who finally looked like the same squad that crushed Raptors Uprising GC last week.
After his brutal first half, Dat Boy Dimez snapped out of his funk late in the third quarter, hitting a floater from outside the paint to get his first basket after seven failed attempts. He wound up finishing the game with a double-double — 10 points and 11 assists — something that was unexpected given his earlier strugglers.
While Dat Boy Dimez found his groove, BallLikeSeem continued to ball out, leading all scorers by the end of regulation with 24 points. Dayfri also got some mojo in the second half, taking his seven point, six rebound first half performance and turning it into a 17 point, 13 rebound double-double.
As much as Mavs Gaming improved their accuracy in the second half, it seemed that Celtics Crossover Gaming lost the contest when their aggressive defense turned sloppy. Giving Mavs Gaming multiple free throw opportunities, including a few technical foul shots, through 13 fouls in 24 minutes, they lost the second half 41-29 and ultimately the game.
Mavs Gaming’s win tarnished Celtics Crossover Gaming’s 2-0 record earned through two impressive comeback victories in week one. They will look to improve to 3-0 on the season when they face 76ers Gaming Club in Saturday’s penultimate match, while Celtics Crossover Gaming will have to wait until their contest next week against Pistons GT to recover from this collapse.
