Blazer5 Gaming handled their opposition to open Week 3 of the NBA 2K League regular season, picking up a 78-64 win Friday over Bucks Gaming.
Milwaukee’s decision to reconfigure their lineup, moving XxSTL2LAxX from small forward to point guard and switching nominal point guard Game6Drake to the open position, didn’t work as they hoped, as Bucks Gaming (0-3) turned the ball over 11 times in the first half alone, with at least three of those coming from the new guard. For large portions of the first quarter, Bucks Gaming had more turnovers than they had made field goals, as the team obviously was out of rhythm.
That opened the door for Blazer5 Gaming to run rampant with fast break opportunities, totalling at least 10 points off of transition buckets. It’s surprising that Portland didn’t command a bigger lead entering the second half, as they not only dominated the turnover differential, but also recorded three offensive rebounds, providing themselves extra possessions. A litany of made three pointers by Milwaukee kept the score surprisingly close throughout the first half, but Blazer5 Gaming pulled away in the third quarter thanks to a dominating performance from point guard Mama Im Dat Man. While he only scored 12 of the team’s 48 second-half points, the second-round pick was by far the biggest catalyst for their success, either knifing his way into the paint for easy floaters, or spacing out the floor well enough to create low post opportunities for OneWildWalnut (19 points and 12 rebounds) and Dat Boy Shotz (22 points and 7 rebounds).
If not for small forward KinG PeroXide, who scored 13 points in the third quarter alone, and BigMeek who finished with 18 points, Bucks Gaming could have potentially lost by an even wider margin. It’ll be interesting to see whether Milwaukee decides to reset their lineup next week when they take on Cavs Legion GC. Blazer5 Gaming, meanwhile, will look to continue their undefeated streak in the final game of Week 4 against Raptors Uprising GC.
