Lakers Gaming came out on top in Wednesday’s battle between expansion teams, defeating Hawks Talon GC 54-48 in the 2K League.
For the first time since Week 2, Lakers Gaming (2-9) has won a game in the 2K League, and their losing streak of six regular games finally comes to an end. Additionally, for the first time all season, Hawks Talon GC (4-5) has lost two games in a row in what has truly been an up-and-down season.
The game was close throughout with the squads trading baskets and leads, as the two teams were separated by just one point after the first quarter, tied at halftime, and Lakers Gaming held just a one-point lead heading into the final six minutes of the contest. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter arrived that Lakers Gaming managed to get some separation, as while Hawks Talon struck first in the quarter and took their first lead of the second half, Lakers Gaming followed that up with an 8-0 run to go up seven. From there, their lead got as large as eight points and never got smaller than five.
It was a very impressive run by Lakers Gaming to close out Wednesday’s contest, especially considering how much they’ve struggled this year in the fourth quarter.
For Lakers Gaming, they were carried offensively by point guard Vert, who set the tone and remained impressive throughout. He finished with a team-high 19 points on seven-of-12 shooting and dished out 10 assists. The starting frontcourt of power forward Detoxys and center Mootyy was also impressive, combining to shoot 11-of-16 from the floor en route to posting a total of 25 points and 15 rebounds.
As for Hawks Talon, they were once again led by power forward Dat Boy Shotz, who time and again has been the catalyst behind the team’s offense. He finished with a game-high 21 points, but it took him 16 shot attempts to get there. Center Arsonal added a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while small forward Rando was the third and final teammate to reach double figures with 12 points.
