In an intense battle of teams that needed a win, Nets Gaming (3-4) snapped a four-game losing streak Friday, taking down Lakers Gaming (1-6) 67-57 to close out Week 5 in the NBA 2K League.
Both teams needed a win, but the Lakers came into this game facing dire circumstances. With only one win to its name and a 20+ point loss to the Warriors earlier on Friday, the Lakers needed to take advantage of a Nets team that was on a cold streak. Things looked good early on as the Lakers jumped out to a five-point lead at the end of the first half. Kev and Mootyy were hitting shots, and KontruL was keeping the turnovers to a minimum. Unfortunately, the Lakers magic would dry up from that point on. Surrendering 18 points in the third quarter, the Lakers managed to keep things interesting in the fourth, with Mootyy getting a big block down the stretch while Kev hit a big three to put the Lakers to 57 as a part of his 22 points. Once overtime began, though, the Lakers were spent, scoring no points and playing with a panicky desperation. Things look grim for the Lakers now, as only tough opponents remain on the schedule for a team that has struggled in just about every aspect of their game.
The Nets described this game as “must-win” for good reason: having lost four in a row after starting the season 2-0. Wavy.zay led all scorers with 23 points on fairly efficient shooting, earning Player of the Game honors in the process. Shockey scored a couple of crucial points in the paint in the fourth quarter as part of his stat line of eight points, 13 rebounds, six assists and two steals, showing off his versatility from the center position. What’s more, the Nets never gave up on each other, playing solid team basketball as they forced 12 steals to the Lakers’ 10 while dishing out a total of 19 assists compared to the Lakers’ 12. Once overtime ticked over, the Nets played composed basketball, shutting the Lakers out by denying three-point attempts and taking home a potentially momentum-changing win.
