Mavs Gaming kept its undefeated streak alive Wednesday with a sloppy 53-50 comeback win over Lakers Gaming.
The Lakers have been so close to putting everything together yet find ways to beat themselves in games where they could pull off upsets. Coming into this matchup against the undefeated Mavs, the Lakers managed to pull ahead early on, scoring 19 in the second quarter. Despite throwing up bad shots, being sloppy with passes, and throwing unnecessary lobs, Lakers Gaming still sported a five-point lead into the second half. Point guard KontruL had a good game against former No. 1 overall pick Dimez, but an untimely cold ring in the fourth quarter kept him from being a factor down the stretch. In the end, while everyone on Lakers Gaming had a chance to step up, the team was simply too undisciplined and too emotional to make its early lead count, doing little more than watch as the Mavs came from behind in a 15-8 fourth quarter to steal the win.
Considering that Mavs Gaming is undefeated, this game does little to inspire confidence as the team prepares to take on a fellow powerhouse in Heat Check Gaming. Dimez had a quiet night, scoring nine, picking up four assists and two steals, but small forward Mo had his back. Mo poured in 17, shooting 5-of-8 from three, and stretched the floor for the rest of Mavs Gaming to get into a rhythm late in the game. Where the Mavs really came in clutch was defense, forcing several crucial turnovers down the stretch as everyone on the team recorded at least one steal. Sure, the gameplan of “wait for the other team to beat itself” might not be sustainable against tougher competition, but be wary of this Mavs team. Mavs Gaming has shown that it can fight its way out of bad situations, and no matter how sloppy the game plays out and no matter who the opponent, every win counts heading into THE TURN.
